It's been a couple of years since I asked this, and I have a broader reach now, so: in the 1980s, there was an oil painter in the Bay Area named Mary Shirey who would do private portraits. She painted my grandparents.
When we lost our storage unit, that painting was in there. If it still exists, I desperately want it back. The painter, near as I can tell, faded into obscurity; its value is purely sentimental.
It shows a man and a woman, the woman chubby and the man quite thin, her with curly hair, him with straight, her with a facial mole on the right side of her chin, under her mouth. The signature should be easy to read--I have another of her paintings.
It would probably still be in the Bay Area, and I literally fear the day it crops up on one of those "Shitty Thrifting" sites having been turned into two monsters or something by a hipster artist who doesn't know those are my Gramma and Grampa.
If you thrift in the Bay Area, please keep an eye open? And if you think you've found the painting, please send me a picture. I would be ecstatic to work out purchasing it and shipping it to me.
I should note that while I can't give accurate dimensions, since I was a kid when this was hanging in the living room, it's not SMALL. We're talking poster-sized.
There's a painting of my mother in her wedding dress by the same artist. Infinitely less of a priority, but if they're found together, I'll buy both.
Mom actually has two of her paintings, found at other thrift stores! Her signature:
