An armada of spammy pornbots has been hijacking the #/CaveFire hashtag this morning. We found 65, all hypothetically tweeting via the Twitter website. (Twitter seems to be filtering some of the activity so we're not confident this is the entire botnet.)

@ZellaQuixote These bots appear to link a variety of different porn sites, although we wouldn't be surprised if this is an obfuscation technique and all the links actually go to the same place (we're not clicking to find out.)
@ZellaQuixote The fire hashtag isn't the only trend these bots are hijacking; their most frequently used hashtags are a mix of porn hashtags, perennial trends like #TuesdayThoughts, and current events like #Sondland, #ImpeachmentHearings, and the aforementioned #/CaveFire.

#TulsiMediaBlackout started trending some time around 1:40 AM PDT this morning (November 30th.) How'd that happen?

(Spoiler: not bots, but not quite organic either.)

@ZellaQuixote Although #TulsiMediaBlackout has seen sporadic usage for a while, the activity resulting in this morning's trend began yesterday (November 29th) with a tweet from @studentsfortulsi calling on the #YangGang for backup. Several pro-Yang accounts subsequently heeded the call.
@ZellaQuixote Retweet network for #TulsiMediaBlackout. @GangUbi's involvement is interesting - this account only posted two #TulsiMediaBlackout tweets of its own but retweeted a whopping 266 others over the course of three hours this morning, fueling the trend.

We downloaded recent content from 151 US city subreddits (Reddit forums), three from each state plus Washington DC, and ran sentiment analysis on the content. This map shows each city colored by the percentage of posts/comments with negative sentiment scores.

@ZellaQuixote Here's the same data in table form. In general, the larger cities had a higher proportion of negative comments, but there are outliers. (Atlanta, for example, has relatively little negative traffic.)

A bunch of accounts tweeted copies of the recent viral aerial video of sheep and sheepdog in action accompanied by the text "A sheepdog herding sheep, seen from the sky. Mesmerizing." What's going on?

@ZellaQuixote We found 23 tweets containing "A sheepdog herding sheep, seen from the sky. Mesmerizing." and the video in question. The original was tweeted by @moorehn on Nov 22/23 (depending on your timezone), and was subsequently plagiarized by 22 accounts, most of them automated.
@ZellaQuixote @moorehn Shared tweet network for the "A sheepdog herding sheep, seen from the sky. Mesmerizing" accounts (accounts are connected if they've tweeted the same tweet at least once, excluding the sheep tweet.) This looks like multiple botnets and some solo acts rather than a single botnet.

You divide Twitter into an old sector on "1.twitter.com" and put all things we have now over there and a new sector at 2.twitter.com.
Handle pools would start afresh on 2.twitter.com while all users would be checked for activity by having them completing a prompt to switch over to the new sector along with their username & content,

Hey, anyone with a bit of free time (& this *is* Twitter so..). There's a big fire near Santa Barbara and folks trying to get info on it are being swarmed by porn bots on #CaveFire hashtag. I'm lurking and reporting them. Can anyone lend a thumb? People need the info.

I was looking around at the #Impeachment hashtag this morning and found a set of "russian" twitter #bots.
This guys tweet engagement (350+ retweets) is all bots.
They seem like spam bots but they are doing some interesting stuff so I figure I would post about them.
Here is what tipped me off to the bots. All the accounts are very similar.
I only say russian because the accounts use Cyrillic in their names and tweets.
They could be ran by anyone from anywhere, I really don't know.

There are hundreds of people still replying to the original “WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS”-type posts who clearly have not seen this blog, and I think it’s important.

Twitter seems to be banning or suspending accounts belonging to critics of the Chinese government. It started yesterday May 31th. Here is one report - I noticed a sudden loss of followers yesterday, I checked, it was mainly China critics. Twitter❤️🇨🇳 Amazing! @mouse @1GigiSims
This is happening as an effort to silence #China critics ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which is next Tuesday. Twitter is helping China do its dirty work to silence the legitimate opposition. Twitter has hit a new all time low! 👎👎👎
One other possibility that can't be discounted is that the #Chinese government is hacking into Twitter and is deleting the accounts of Chinese critics. I did hear reports in the past, that Chinese hackers were able to get into Twitter & do that.
