Amid news this morning that police are entering Poly U with a "safety team" to clear dangerous chemicals, debris and assess the situation, the @washingtonpost has two new pieces up, the first by @laurelchor on her experiences inside campus for six days: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
@washingtonpost @laurelchor With @annakamtw and @tiffanyliang_hk, we spoke to three protesters who successfully escaped Poly U, and traced the drama, risk and lingering trauma of their inconceivable exits. Photos by @mayyin9 :

@washingtonpost @laurelchor @annakamtw @tiffanyliang_hk @mayyin9 There was so much that couldn't possibly fit in the story; words seem insufficient to characterize how a 28-year old graphic designer (who likes Spongebob Squarepants) went from a mundane life 6 months ago to rappelling down a bridge after 12 hours of trying to snuff out tear gas
@washingtonpost @laurelchor @annakamtw @tiffanyliang_hk @mayyin9 And also how a 32-year old woman who simply thought she was dropping off supplies at the university ended up being trapped for hours, before similarly rappelling down. She said it took her days to finally feel calm again, and to sleep normally.
@washingtonpost @laurelchor @annakamtw @tiffanyliang_hk @mayyin9 She shared that one of the protesters in the getaway car with her seemed to have temporary amnesia, hitting his head after his fall. He kept asking what he was doing there, who everyone was, why he was at Poly U, and seemed terrified and discombobulated
@washingtonpost @laurelchor @annakamtw @tiffanyliang_hk @mayyin9 Our main character, Yui, appeared almost unnaturally chill and light about the whole thing. The only way this has changed him, he said, is frustration that he has to wait weeks before going out to the front-lines again as his left leg is in a cast (he fell badly from the ropes)
@washingtonpost @laurelchor @annakamtw @tiffanyliang_hk @mayyin9 But he added at the end that his mother, who sometimes lives with him and his sister in their 400 sq ft flat, hears him scream while he sleeps. He says things like "Let's go, let's go now, they are coming!" and sometimes appears to be wailing
