The new law will allow a form of class action not only to enforce general consumer law (product liability, unfair terms etc) but also laws re passengers, tourism, health, e-commerce/broadcasting, telecoms, energy and financial services.

1/ This Conservative party summary of EU state aid rules includes a false/misleading claim. It says that "aid must be approved by the EU institutions to be lawful", referring to Article 108 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.

This is untrue, as there's an exception ->
2/ Here's Art 108. Para 4 allows for the adoption of block exemptions for notifying State aid: eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/…

They apply to SMEs, regional aid, training, research, transport, the environment, workers and more
3/ Around 95% of State aid measures don't have to be notified to the EU Commission - yet the Tories today claimed that all of them had to be. Please fact check them, @SebastianEPayne and other journos reporting this

1/ This is either ignorant or dishonest about Trump's trade policy on drug pricing. It's the other way around - Trump's policy is to *increase* the prices paid for drugs outside the US.
2/ Here's Trump's policy on drug pricing in his own words, objecting to "unreasonably low prices" outside the US - from the House of Lords library briefing on "the NHS and future trade deals", 4 July 2019
3/ Some have objected to Corbyn saying that Trump seeks "full market access" for medical products. But this phrase is found in the Trump administration's own public document setting out its objectives in the US/UK talks.

Back in December 2017, with the aid of a useful graphic, Michel Barnier explained that under a UK-EU FTA, the UK would have 'regulatory autonomy' - which is to say that we will not be bound to follow any EU rules and regulations.

He pointed out the UK's red lines: no ECJ jurisdiction, no free movement, no substantial ongoing financial contribution, independent trade policy, and regulatory autonomy, and observed that neither the EEA-EFTA, nor the Swiss, nor the Ukraine, nor the Turkey model were compatible
with them. They were however compatible with an FTA of the type of the CETA and EU-Korea FTAs.

Under these FTAs, Canada and Korea (that is, South Korea) do not generally bind themselves to adopt or conform to a EU laws and regulations.

Een belangrijk punt voor de fvd is dat de EU niet deugt. Het online partijprogramma is op dit punt (welk wel) overigens niet erg uitgebreid. We lezen iets over ondemocratische moloch en ‘kartel op kartel’. Wat dat inhoudt, wordt niet duidelijk.

De fvd zegt dat de #EU mislukt is en miljarden kost en de economieën in Zuid-Europa er door vernietigd worden. De onderbouwing voor deze beweringen ontbreekt. In de uitgaven voor de EU zijn de miljarden overigens niet terug te vinden.

#euco met in its EU27 formation meaning the UK Government was not part of the decision-making process. Instead, the Prime Minister spoke to #euco ahead of its considerations. 2/10
The UK will not now leave the European Union on 12 April. Instead a flexible extension has been granted to 31 October. If the Withdrawal Agreement is ratified before then, the UK will leave the EU at the end of the month in which the Agreement is ratified. 3/10

1. The Opinion produced yesterday by David Anderson QC and 5 other specialists in EU law (available at daqc.co.uk/2019/03/28/art… ) is an important and thoughtful contribution on a difficult subject.
2. The approach they have taken is different from that explored tentatively in my earlier tweets. So much the better.
3. Rather than getting bogged down in how to get UK MEPs to the European Parliament (EP) otherwise than by the obvious and normal method of electing them, they have taken a step back and looked at the underlying issues of democratic representation and legitimacy.

Brace for mega thread on "ALL THEM RULES INNIT"

There is a type of of brexiter who is motivated not by xenophobia, or Empire nostalgia, or buccaneering trade fantasies, but instead by "all them EU rules". Sadly they can never name a single one. So I have done some research...
The commons library looked at how many UK laws were influenced by EU laws.

Here's my (probably futile) attempt to explain
The challenge: Theresa May needs a legally binding reassurance on the Northern Ireland backstop that does not actually change Britain's exit treaty.
The Danes faced this problem in 1992 when they voted down the Maastricht treaty.

With (a little) help from the Brits and some nifty footwork from @piris_jc a creative solution was found.

(@OleRyborg says it was first written on a copy of the FT during a Brazil-Norway flight)
