There's a new report that's shaping #COP25.

It's called the "Production Gap Report," a groundbreaking look at the need to phaseout fossil fuel production.

Here's a thread on a side event on the report's conclusions -->

The report's revelation was shocking: "Governments are planning to produce about 50% more fossil fuels by 2030 than would be consistent with limiting warming to 2°C and 120% more than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C."

We're digging our way to disaster.
The conclusion is simple: the only way to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement is to phaseout fossil fuel production.

But currently the agreement doesn't mention the words "fossil fuels" once, so there's a push at #COP25 to get the "f-words" into the negotiations.
Some countries and states are beginning to lead the way: Belize, Costa Rica, France, Denmark, and New Zealand have all enacted partial or total bans on oil and gas exploration and California just acted to stop new fracking.
Here at the #COP25 event, New Zealand is sharing about how they banned offshore oil and gas development and launched a "just transition fund" to support workers and communities in the shift to a new clean energy economy. theguardian.com/world/2018/apr…
"Involve unions from the outset, involve workers at the table as equal partners."

Those are the keys for a successful just transition according to Joie Warnock, the Western Regional Director for UNIFOR, a Canadian union that helped Alberta shift away from coal.
"There can be no decarbonization while you're exploring for oil and gas...it's pretty simple," says Felipe de Leon of Costa Rica, which also has a moratorium on oil and gas development (and banned ended their military). Pretty awesome.
These conclusions aren't new -- we've been talking about "keep it in the ground" for years -- but this report is unique because it was released with the support of UNEP and is being absorbed directly in the UN process.

In Q&A, the panel emphasizes a key point: you've got to follow the money.

Ending fossil fuel subsidies and shifting investments away from coal, oil and gas towards renewables is essential. newyorker.com/news/daily-com…
“[Oil companies] are bringing jobs and they are bringing money…but development is not the case. Development has to give you health and sustain the environment,” says Felipe de Leon of Costa Rica.
How can you help? Spread the word about the need to stop the production of fossil fuels! Here's a great video to share from our team at @350.
Organizations and individuals can also sign the Lofoten Declaration, a global call to phaseout fossil fuel production. lofotendeclaration.org
Finally, take action! Join up with @350 @standearth @PriceofOil @CenterForBioDiv @Greenpeace @StopCorpAbuse @RAN @SierraClub & more and help us stop new coal, oil and gas infrastructure, end the financing of fossil fuels, and get 100% renewables for all!
UPDATE: New Zealand may have banned *new* drilling permits, but they’re still allowing oil companies with existing permits to search for new oil. Our friends at Greenpeace are taking action to stop these oil giants now!
