A thread by the "expert's expert" on the development of ports and capacity issues, which I'm going to piggybank with a less expert prediction based on my understanding of Border Force.
Border Force is a law enforcement command within the Home Office. It secures the UK border by carrying out immigration and customs controls for people and goods entering the UK
At the moment, in the Single Market, Border Force are restricted in what they can do on goods coming in and our of Europe.
But leave the EU, and I think you'll find they become legally responsible for everything from all countries.
To help Border Force, we have presence and intelligence in the European Union, but after Brexit, that may not be possible.
This means the number of security checks on products going in and out of the country will increase. I can't think of a situation where it doesn't, either between Ireland and the UK or the UK and any other EU country.
So I don't have the depth of knowledge that Anna has, but, from my understanding, there are going to be more security checks, and therefore more friction, whatever the negotiated customs arrangements.
Which some people might prefer, but it's yet another thing that adds friction and make us less competitive.
