Washington Post re: US-UK published trade deal negotiating objectives contains language that would water down planned online crackdown holding tech giants responsible for harmful content, already exported from US via Nafta renegotiation - very interesting on new trade trade offs:
Eg when PM May announced online harms legislation earlier this year -“tough punishments” promised to tech companies that fail to remove and control harmful content... new Queens Speech language talked of “processes and systems rather than penalising”
Senior Tory MP Collins already warning Government not to accept section 230 provisions protecting tech platforms, in US-UK trade deal (some discussion around this in the leaked papers)...
Indeed must see interview with US Trade representative I told you about earlier...Lightizer refers to new USMCA deal as the “gold standard” on digital trade” and the “template” for future US deals - it includes that section 230 tech company protection...

... That is exactly how US has couched its approach to pathogen reduction treatments for eg chicken
most notable part of the speech so far that the PM has chosen to start to make an argument that a move in the direction of US food standards from EU ones could be "driven by science" and "America-bashers" disagree
PM: "I understand the concerns about chlorinated chicken - not a hygiene issue, an animal welfare issue" says US would have to accept UK welfare standards

Quite a story this - relies on Nissan’s share of UK market going from 1 in 25 cars to 1 in 5 as WTO tariffs of 10% applied to VWs, Fords.
Presumably Japan trade deal helps with parts too...
... It’s denied that this is an actual contingency plan though in the official Nissan quote, which has the rather alarming quote that WTO tariffs would make Nissan’s “entire business” both in UK and Europe “not sustainable”...
Eg the idea seems to predate these reports on plans for a major post Ghosn restructure... including suggestion two plants would be shut:

Brexit Day report on the economic choices ahead all visible from rather close to here...

Where?
It’s Port of Liverpool - part of journey I did this week up Mersey estuary for news at 10 on big Brexit econ choice/ trade off..

Here they say: “What we’re doing is trying to anticipate benefits as result of Brexit, how trade flows might shift, & adjust strategy accordingly” /1
Across the water though is the Birkenhead ferry to Belfast, whose transport of goods will see new checks after transition, within the internal boundaries of the UK under terms of renegotiated Brexit deal... essentially to get more freedom for above... big choice is what sort. /2

UK - We don't like our deal
EU - Why not?
UK - We only get 95% of what we want
EU - It only gives us 95% too
UK - We want a new deal that gives us 100% of what we want
EU - But that means we only get 90% of what we want

.@ASPI_ICPC put this site + public database together to help fill a research gap. In 2018 we had non-stop Qs from international media & stakeholders we couldn't answer: "What is Huawei, Tencent, Baidu, CETC etc doing in X country?" They were always very difficult Qs to answer
There's a lack of public quantitative & qualitative data & to get underneath many of the major activities of some of these companies you need Mandarin, an understanding of Chinese state financing structure really helps & you need @internetarchive! chinatechmap.aspi.org.au/#/about-this-p…
