A mother can love being a mother, love her kids, AND love other things in life more than being a mother. That doesn’t make the woman selfish. It makes her a human being whose identity is not _exclusively_ defined by one type of relationship she has with other human beings. 1/
The demand for women to publicly perform/declare motherhood above all other achievements, identities, and concerns is a patriarchal scam. It tells women with kids that nothing we do matters more than having kids, and to women without, nothing matters cuz they don’t have kids. 2/
Why insist women put a role/identity as mothers above all? Labor. Back, heart, neck, ambition, competition-breaking WORK in limited spaces. If you tell women nothing we ever do can mean more than mothering, you justify limiting our non-mothering activities, power, influence. 3/
And who benefits most in the scam to tell women mothering is the most important work we can/should ever do? Men. Nobody says fatherhood is their highest calling. Men fully realize themselves in varied roles without competition from women limited by sexism, guilt, and pressure. 4/
Stop persecuting moms not claiming kids as their crowning life achievement! I love and value my children. Greater to me, however, than my role as mother is being a TEACHER. My kids are humans with identities independent of their relation to me. I maintain that same right.
