I often relay stories of being stopped from eating off nonkosher menus in NYC by non-Jewish workers (say, in Dunkin Donuts, which has a kosher and nonkosher list of products). Being visibly Jewish in NYC meant something very special, very warm, very home.

Now it means fear.
Ppl outside NYC can't really understand what a shift this is, from one extreme--acceptance as Orthodox Jews in broader society--to the other. Felt like it happened in the blink of an eye. The past is never dead; it's not even past.

The ground beneath my beloved city has opened.
Most insulting part of all this is that not one--not one--writer who was all over right-wing antisemitism has done any kind of examination of this trend. Not one. How did we become so expendable to our friends? It's a question I'll be asking a lot.
You should see me in my DMs and emails, practically begging ppl to cover this. A humiliating spectacle, made all the more so because their answer is always nah. Jews asking to be treated as humans, it being considered a ridiculous request, the song remains the same.
Well, maybe a change of tactics is in order. Tried private diplomacy. Maybe 2020 will require a different strategy.
Ha, and just as I write this, this song comes on a random giant playlist. open.spotify.com/track/4khRfibu…
At The NY Times, the only one consistently calling this out is @bariweiss (who I don’t think considers herself a leftist).

At the Forward, there’s @bungarsargon, who might consider herself a leftist. Either way, these are left-leaning pubs and Bari and Batya’s work is crucial.
There’s no one doing this work at The Atlantic. There’s no one doing this work at the Washington Post.

I’m a paid subscriber to both, btw, so these are pubs I like. But on this issue, there’s not a single person doing the work.
Likewise, there’s not a single person doing this work at Vox, the New Yorker, Huffington Post, NYRB, The Week, TNR, Slate, the Nation, Mother Jones, TPM, Harpers.

Missing any?
Missed Politico—there’s not a soul at Politico doing this work. Businessweek? None. Newsweek? None. Time? None.

Zero. Who else?
CNN has Tapper, carrying the burden alone. MSNBC—the network of Al Sharpton—has none. Zero.

Who else?
Buzzfeed! Zero, nada, no one doing this work. Buzzfeed is one of the most frustrating, because they’re not supposed to be bound by traditional media habits. They’re the disrupters. But can’t be bothered to go against the grain on antisemitism.

Who else?
That’s a LOT of publications! And the only ones paying attention are NYT and the Forward, thanks to each having an editor who isn’t a coward. If you work for any other publication on this list, your company is part of the problem.
Commentary isn’t left-of-center. Right-of-center pubs are stepping up, Commentary foremost among them.
Forgot the Daily Beast. Also not doing the work on this.

Folks, do the work or get called out. Jewish blood is being spilled and I have no more patience to pretend you deserve points for meaning well.
