So, let's talk about foreign policy and where the candidates stand. In our scorecard, we evaluated whether the candidates will depart from our militaristic global affairs and instead advance a progressive foreign policy. /THREAD
We looked to see if the candidates would commit to diplomacy and foreign aid, and whether they'll take into account other external conditions, such as climate change, in their foreign policy.
Specifically, here are the questions we asked them in our questionnaire. You can check out the full rubric here: docs.google.com/document/d/1Me…
In that open-ended question, we were looking for the candidates to identify non-military challenges such as climate change, the risk of authoritarianism and white nationalism, election security, or inequality.
We wanted them to propose non-military solutions such as increased participating in international institutions, partnerships, and agreements, and robust diplomacy and international development to tackle top challenges.
We also wanted them to commit to appropriately funding the national security tools mot needed to keep us safe. That means proposing reductions to the bloated Pentagon budget and having a plan to rebuild the State Department and bolster peacebuilding agencies.
We also *really* need the candidates to have a plan to end endless war, recognizing that US foreign policy has long been on the wrong path (far before Trump). An A+ answer would recommend repealing current authorizations for the use of military force (AUMFs).
Lastly, we were looking for the candidates to have a plan to prevent future conflicts by committing to seek specific and time-bound congressional approval for any future use of force other than immediate self-defense and reentering/building upon diplomatic agreements.
How did the candidates score? @ewarren, @BernieSanders , and @JulianCastro tied for first place in this section, all with an 85%. You can read more about why/how they received their scores at scorecard.indivisible.org.
Behind these top 3 candidates came @amyklobuchar with a 71%, @JoeBiden and @TomSteyer with a 65%, @corybooker with a 60%, and @PeteButtigieg with a 50%.
Mayor Buttigieg scored poorly in this section because he failed to make a firm commitment to repeal the open-ended 2001 and 2002 use of force authorizations that have been used to wage wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He also did not commit to a new, more progressive approach to American foreign policy & failed to identify non-military national security threats facing our nation and indicated he would continue a militaristic approach to foreign policy and national security.
All of the candidates have room to do better here -- we hope that you'll demand that they do (and we look forward to updating scores to reflect any changes in their positions).
