This passage especially took me up short. Remember 2004 when battling gay marriage was a central GOP talking point? Or Sarah Palin’s entire 2008 persona that was just policy-free distilled white rage?
The author seems to be following in the footsteps of Max Boot who put forward a similar narrative about a once principled and inclusive party suddenly taken over by Trump’s exclusionary nastiness.
The author of that piece actually lived that history from the inside. I look forward to reading their book about the transformation of the GOP as they saw it. I’m just saying, lots of people saw this coming a long time ago.
