The US embassy in Iraq was attacked at the start of the year by a crowd angered by US airstrikes targeting an Iran-backed militia.

The protesters have since withdrawn from the area after a tense standoff.
US and Iran tensions have been continually rising.

The Pentagon confirmed today that Iranian General Qassem Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad.

"This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans," the Pentagon said.

The US embassy in Baghdad has reportedly urged citizens to "depart Iraq immediately" after the strike.

Iraq PM Adil Abdul-Mahdi says that the US can expect retaliation, and that the strike "will spark a devastating war in Iraq."
The strike also reportedly killed the deputy commander of Iraqi paramilitary group Hashd Shaabi.

Iraq PM Abdel-Mahdi: "The assassination of an Iraqi military commander in an official post is an aggression against the country of Iraq, its state, its government and its people,"
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded to events saying "vigorous revenge is waiting for the criminals."
The Pentagon has also said that Iranian commander Soleimani was developing plans to attack Americans.

“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qassem Soleimani.”
"Due to heightened tensions in Iraq and the region, the U.S. Embassy urges American citizens to heed the January 2020 Travel Advisory and depart Iraq immediately."
