Reminder: before US escalated things with Iran, the regime was facing the largest, longest lasting internal protests in years/decades. And we essentially doused those uprisings.
America was too distracted by its own mess to pay much attention but protests, internet blackout, brutal crackdown, growing protests... if you want regime change in Iran, things we’re looking about as good as they could look.
Note that the Trump administration is not claiming that this assassination was designed to add fuel to those protests. There’s been no mention of them.
Now Suleimani was both revered and feared. His death by other means may have helped propel internal dissent. But at our hands? Nothing brings people together, or justifies draconian internal dissent quashing, like a shared foreign enemy.*

*exceptjon, today’s GOP Congress.
Anyway, is the intent regime change and attack prevention? Or is it reflection and macho posturing?

Thus far the evidence of greater risk of attacks seems paper thin. And we did even consider how this would impact internal resistance/reform movement? So far, crickets on that.
