The problem with "race is a biological category" is that you can't simultaneously make that claim and categorize people by race in a way that at all resembles the way the term "race" is used in the real world.
As soon as you say "race is a biological category" you have to answer straightforward questions like "So was Bob Marley black?" in bizarre and/or convoluted ways. There's no getting around it. It's inevitable.
And if your definition of race is at odds with the way the term is used in common parlance, it raises an obvious, and very awkward, question: If you're going to completely redefine the word, why not just ... use a different word?
