Wow, awful news. Ukrainian officials initially blamed engine failure for the @fly_uia crash in Iran but now say a cause cannot be determined until an official investigation takes place. All 176 passengers and crew feared dead. buzzfeednews.com/article/claudi…
@fly_uia Video of the crash site here. Mostly Iranian and Canadian citizens on board; 11 Ukrainians. Nobody survived.
The airline releases a full passenger list, in English: nv.ua/ukraine/events…

Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure noted that 13 children under the age of 10 are among the dead. It also published the passenger list on Facebook.

Ukrainian International Airlines says in its statement about the crash that "the last scheduled maintenance of the aircraft took place on 06 January, 2020." So, just two days ago. flyuia.com/us/en/news/202…
Ukraine's embassy in Iran first said it ruled out possible attack as cause of @fly_uia crash but then removed its statement. Ukrainian officials seem unconvinced by tech failure reports. Cautious @PMHoncharuk says: "It's too soon to talk about any causes."
Ukrainian President Zelensky: “I keep all measures under personal control. I urge everyone to refrain from speculation and putting forward unverified versions of the disaster before the official announcements.” president.gov.ua/en/news/volodi…
@fly_uia @PMHoncharuk Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council says it's negotiating with Iran to repatriate the bodies of 11 Ukrainians killed in today's crash.

As aviation experts are pointing out, @fly_uia has an excellent safety record and hasn't had a plane crash until today. It also recently began upgrading its fleet. "Currently, UIA fleet’s total average age amounts to 11.5 years," the company said in 2018. flyuia.com/us/en/news/201…
I've lived in Ukraine for 10 years & have flown @fly_uia countless times domestically & internationally. I used to not enjoy it b/c planes were old & didn't have in-flight entertainment, & the food was lousy. (I also don't like flying it b/c of oligarch Kolomoisky's stake in it.)
But I never felt unsafe on UIA and didn't on recent flights. And the upgraded fleet has made the flying experience much, much better, especially on its direct Kyiv-JFK flight. Anyway, just some context.
New Zelensky statement says a Ukrainian plane carrying officials, experts, search & rescue team is departing to Iran. "They will all be involved in the investigation, identification and repatriation of the bodies of Ukrainians killed in the plane crash." president.gov.ua/en/news/prezid…
Key phrase in Ukraine President Zelensky's state here: "Our priority is to establish the truth and those responsible for this terrible catastrophe," the President emphasized.

"...those responsible..." jumps out at me.
Zelensky was still in Oman when the Ukrainian plane in Iran crashed. He's now back in Kyiv.
Trump just delivered statement on US-Iran tensions but answered no questions and said nothing about the Ukrainian plane crash.
Pompeo comments on Ukrainian plane crash in Iran, saying US will "follow this incident closely and stands prepared to offer Ukraine all possible assistance." Also, not naming Iran, which has said it won't share black boxes, calls "for complete cooperation with any investigation."
