Wow, awful news. Ukrainian officials initially blamed engine failure for the @fly_uia crash in Iran but now say a cause cannot be determined until an official investigation takes place. All 176 passengers and crew feared dead. buzzfeednews.com/article/claudi…

As aviation experts are pointing out, @fly_uia has an excellent safety record and hasn't had a plane crash until today. It also recently began upgrading its fleet. "Currently, UIA fleet’s total average age amounts to 11.5 years," the company said in 2018. flyuia.com/us/en/news/201…
I've lived in Ukraine for 10 years & have flown @fly_uia countless times domestically & internationally. I used to not enjoy it b/c planes were old & didn't have in-flight entertainment, & the food was lousy. (I also don't like flying it b/c of oligarch Kolomoisky's stake in it.)
But I never felt unsafe on UIA and didn't on recent flights. And the upgraded fleet has made the flying experience much, much better, especially on its direct Kyiv-JFK flight. Anyway, just some context.

Key phrase in Ukraine President Zelensky's state here: "Our priority is to establish the truth and those responsible for this terrible catastrophe," the President emphasized.

"...those responsible..." jumps out at me.
Zelensky was still in Oman when the Ukrainian plane in Iran crashed. He's now back in Kyiv.
Trump just delivered statement on US-Iran tensions but answered no questions and said nothing about the Ukrainian plane crash.
Pompeo comments on Ukrainian plane crash in Iran, saying US will "follow this incident closely and stands prepared to offer Ukraine all possible assistance." Also, not naming Iran, which has said it won't share black boxes, calls "for complete cooperation with any investigation."

⚡️Whoa. Ukraine's interior minister says police have detained suspects in the 2016 car-bomb assassination of journalist Pavel Sheremet.
Ukrainian interior ministry and police tell me they won't comment on the Sheremet suspects until a briefing this evening. But one clue may be this: musician Andriy Antonenko posted on Facebook that he was being arrested for Sheremet's murder and his home was being searched.
Interior Minister @AvakovArsen has announced a press conference at 430pm/5pm Kyiv time (in 30min-1hour) to provide more details about the suspects apprehended in the Sheremet murder. It'll be broadcast live.

Riaboshapka says some 15 cases are to be reviewed.

"Now we are conducting an audit of those cases that were previously investigated by the Prosecutor General's Office."
So, this looks not necessarily like the investigation that Trump wants — a probe focused on Hunter Biden and Joe Biden — but an audit of the cases that were previously opened and then closed or shelved, in order to see what — if anything — went wrong with them.
The focus will be on Riaboshapka's predecessors and cases in which Burisma owner Zlochevskiy and businessman Kurchenko are involved.

- Assuming 10% recovery rate in the field, 2.2 billion barrels of crude oil have been added to the country’s crude oil production capacity.

-This is the second largest oilfield discovered in Iran following Asmari Oil Layer in Gachsaran with 54 billion barrels of oil in place.

Iran (un() Deal Day THREAD: 1) @realDonaldTrump hasn't been consistent on a lot, but he has been consistent on the Iran Deal. He's been against it for years and called it a "disaster" and "insane" on the campaign. So this time he's not flip flopping.
2) Pulling out of the deal may have been on faulty analysis of what we could achieve vis-a-vis a better deal. Wonder what @CIA @ODNIgov assessed was or was not achievable and if @POTUS thought he knew better
3) Also wondering whether this approach was based on any analysis that NO deal is better than THIS deal or was this an @WhiteHouse negotiating tactic that misfired

Thread: Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons & what it does.

It is important to understand the various mechanisms that form the OPCW and what will happen in Douma.

The team heading to Douma is a "Fact Finding Mission" (FFM). This is an important point. 1/?
It means that the team will identify and assess the facts of the case, such as what agents were used (if any) casualties, what happened on the night etc.

It is *not* within their mandate to assign responsibility, so don't expect a silver bullet from their report. 2/?
In order to establish responsibility for the attack, a Joint Investigation Mechanism (JIM) will probably be required.

The last JIM found that the Syrian regime was responsible for Khan Sheikhoun, & multiple attacks using chlorine gas canisters dropped from helicopters. 3/5
