Over the 5 years to 2018, 716 cases of #AcidAttack against women have been reported in India under section 326A of the Indian Penal Code. Reported cases declined 11% from 148 in 2017 to 131 in 2018, latest national crime data show. #Chhapaak #DeepikaPadukone

Acids used in industrial processes are sold in open markets and are used for other purposes such as toilet cleaning. A litre of diluted acid--the kind used for toilet cleaning, e.g. and sold in open market--is as low as Rs 50.

Overall, reported cases of crimes against women in India increased by 5% to 378,277 in 2018, from 359,849 in 2017, national crime data show. That is 1,036 cases reported every day in 2018, up from 986 in 2017.

Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, reported the most, 59,445 or 15% of all cases, of crime against women in 2018, followed by Maharashtra (35,497). Assam reported the highest crime rate—166—per 100,000 women population, followed by Delhi (149.6); national avg (58.8).
