Spent time with my Bernie-supporting friend last night who still believes the Dem Party is “suppressing support for Bernie” + that Warren is a liar who “can’t not keep shooting herself in the foot” + “does NOT have the same policies” as Bernie. Zero interest in unity v. Trump🧵
And don’t even ask what he had to say about our other candidates 😳 It has me so depressed I can’t stop thinking about it. There is so much evidence proving that a divisive primary can + will weaken our eventual nominees’s ability to win the general.
It happened in 16 +could happen again unless we find a way to unify against Trump ASAP. Our org +others helping to fill in for a nominee by taking the fight to Trump, we’re not spending time or resources on this challenge +I honestly don’t know what that would look like if we did
Some Bernie supporters seem to exert more energy attacking other Dems than Trump (my bro is def in this camp) regardless of potential backlash. On the other side of the coin, I don’t feel invited into their movement if I can find things to appreciate +trust in all of our nominees
As I told my friend, I will proudly vote for Bernie on Election Day if he is our candidate (as I will for whoever the eventual Democratic nominee is), and all I hope with all my heart is that he will do the same.
But I also feel strongly that this is a responsibility of every candidate to address with their fiercest supporters, especially as the primary gets more competitive- b/c whoever our nominee is, they have to be able to bring as many of us together as possible if we’re going to win
I’m just struggling to see how we get there from here, esp if voters are still not galvanizing around one nominee by Super Tuesday. HATE raising challenges w/out solutions, so if you all have ideas or sparks of hope you’re holding, please do share to course correct this fear🙏🏼🇺🇸
