THREAD: As part of reporting my new @WIRED piece on Huawei, China, and the Trump administration, I traveled to Shenzhen to see Huawei's offices. Follow along as I take you on a tour of the most surreal landscape globalization has produced.... wired.com/story/us-feds-…
Huawei has built a 3.5-square-mile, $1.5 billion R&D campus in Dongguan to house 25,000 workers—it's entirely modeled on different European cities.
All told, it has 108 buildings, one for each billion-dollars of revenue it had when the campus opened a year ago. Here's the imported Swiss train that carries you around campus:
Each part of the campus is named after one of 12 different European cities—so you pass through places like Paris, Verona, Burgundy, Luxembourg, Oxford, Bruges, Bologna, and Heidelberg.
This is the view outside of one of the Hauwei cafeterias on the campus:
The office buildings themselves all look like Europe:
Here's another office building:
The skyline of Huawei's campus is just surreal:
There are more than a 1000 statues dotting the campus:
Like this:
And rivers that flow throughout the campus:
Peaceful village squares:
And well-tended tranquil lawns that make you feel like you're at a European college that stretches back hundreds of years:
Off in the distance, you can see the high-rises Huawei is building to house its workers:
For more on Huawei's ambitions and its titantic battle with the US government, see my new piece in the February issue of @wired: wired.com/story/us-feds-…
PS: All these photos were shot on a @Huawei P30 smartphone, with a Leica lens. Their Android phones aren’t available in the US, but are widely considered some of the best cameras in the world. I asked to be loaned one in China, since I’d never used one before. It was impressive.
And PPS: @wired paid for my reporting trip. Thanks @nxthompson for letting me blow your expense account!
