Summer: raises Biden's political prospects with Xi in trade negotiations. Fall: Publicly calls for Xi to probe Biden. Late fall: Trump aide Pillsbury says China gave him Biden intel.
VIDEO/ Want to know how bad this scandal that hasn't even hit yet is? Watch Trump's trade-war negotiator Peter Navarro get angry as hell when asked about Trump privately and publicly raising the matter of a Biden probe with Xi. This'll get real bad, folks.
PS/ And folks, wait until you see how Trump's private business interests (and Ivanka's) line up perfectly with actions taken by Trump in a trade war *he* initiated—apparently to gain leverage in his own bid for Chinese trademarks.

PS2/ Navarro, refusing to talk on-air about what Trump has or has not said to Xi about Biden, calls Schiff a "sociopath" and calls a potential Trump-China scandal a "hoax" and "witch hunt." Sound *familiar*? Folks... this is *never going to end*—because Trump is *never punished*.
PS3/ The strangest moment in the Sciutto-Navarro interview: @JimSciutto asks Navarro if he ever raised investigating Biden to Xi in trade negotiations (*in Beijing*) and Navarro answers that he "will never talk about" conversations that happened... "in the White House." Whoa—WTF?

I have a feeling many of the senators underestimated how nauseating and ultimately demeaning it would be to have to sit in their seats for hours listening to Trump's lawyers talk nonsense intended not for the ears of the Senate jurors but a single crazy person in the White House
I mean really if you're one of 100 U.S. senators and you have to be a wax-doll proxy for a man you don't respect on live television for two weeks or more without any sense of autonomy whatsoever you've got to feel about an inch tall and like your life went off the rails somewhere
By the way "absolute immunity" is so not a thing in our justice system that Philbin may as well be telling a little story to the senators about a cross between a fluffy bunny and a majestic unicorn that he saw in a dream once when he was six years old and still afraid of the dark

Media reported in December 2019 that Trump was calling McConnell "3 times a day" making threats about the impeachment trial. Now you know why McConnell—for the first time in memory—misjudged his caucus on the length of opening statements and admission of the House record: Trump.
(In case you missed it, there were *two* rebellions in the GOP caucus this morning: McConnell said he had the votes for 4 days of opening statements instead of 6, and didn't, and retreated; he said he had the votes to halt admission of the House record, he didn't, and retreated.)
(Indeed, the story of the day today, procedurally, is McConnell being uncharacteristically unprepared to lead his caucus. And the clear *reason* for this is that *he's not running the trial*. *Donald Trump* is running the trial. McConnell is just Trump's puppet, now. It's scary.)

In case you're wondering, this isn't how trial litigation works

Usually you have facts rather than rhetoric, and don't personally attack your party opponent
Let's say you're not a lawyer but a plumber or construction worker or gardener

Watching Trump's defense is—for a lawyer—like it'd be if you watched a) a plumber fix a sink with a pipe bomb, b) a construction worker saw a board with a burrito, c) a gardener garden with fire ants
I, like, don't even know what I'm watching here as an attorney

Sekulow and Cipollone may as well be hot dog vendors who accidentally walked in off the street and were asked to pound a lectern for 30 minutes and say "words"

#China will attempt a forceful unification with #Taiwan by 2021, the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party. Xi's grand dream of national rejuvenation entails unifying all that #CCP considers Chinese lands, especially Taiwan.

This THREAD looks at this potential scenario.
The legitimacy of the #CCP regime under Xi is based on the twin pillars of economic growth and nationalism. For the party-state, unifying the mainland and Taiwan is critical to its aspirations of national rejuvenation and erasure of national humiliation.
Why would PRC force a unification as early as 2021? 1) 2021 is the centenary of the #CCP; anniversaries and dates have massive symbolic importance in China's political culture. 2) Xi wants unification to be part of his legacy. This is the only way that he can outshine #Mao.
