It’s beyond dispute that increased atmospheric CO2 is warming the planet, causing negative climate and human impacts. The 2016 UN Paris Agreement was intended to cap this warming at 1.5°C globally by 2100. But the US pulled out, and others aren't taking sufficient action. /2

A recent UN report shows we must cut carbon pollution 7.6% annually through 2030 to keep within the 1.5°C target. We need strong action at all government levels - especially local - to reduce carbon. /3

So CXC is on a mission to put a price on carbon pollution in states across the country. Pricing the pollution at the root of the climate crisis is crucial in mitigating its impacts and moving towards a clean, low-carbon economy. /4

Why price carbon? To address a market failure. By putting a charge on polluting fuels, we can not only incentivize the market toward cleaner energy sources, but also generate needed revenue to invest in this transition. /5

Does it work? Among others, the International Monetary Fund calls carbon pricing “the most powerful and efficient tool” to reduce carbon emissions; worldwide, 58 initiatives already put a price on carbon. /6

Last June, Pope Francis called carbon pricing “essential” to curb climate change, “to avoid perpetrating a brutal act of injustice towards the poor and future generations.” /7

Straight carbon pricing is regressive. But most proposed legislation rebates part of the revenue to vulnerable households and businesses, and targets investment in disadvantaged communities. /8
