quick thread re: coverage of pending impeachment vote on witnesses.

a reminder we've seen this GOP charade before and we've seen this same type of excited coverage before, which oversells story

we saw it w/ gun votes after mass shootings, and w/ Kavanaugh votes during hearings
the premise is always, 'OMG Republicans are facing public pressure etc and mounting evidence, and OMG a whole bunch of Republicans want to break ranks and do the right thing'

but it never happens.
the press *loves" this premise for the simple reason it makes sense.

for generations that's how politics worked in the US--parties responded to overwhelming public pressure and obvious factual evidence and had to switch positions...sometimes dramatically!
but today's radical GOP doesn't play by any logical rules. it doesn't care about public sentiment or evidence. and esp under Trump it functions purely as a cult that protects him.

yet still, we see this excited coverage re: unnamed GOPs ready to stand up and do right thing.
i have no idea how final vote will go (altho i have a hunch). i do, however, have a firm memory of what GOP **always does in these instances,** and that ought to be reflected in the coverage.
you have to ask if it’s McConnell’s office itself that leaked stories (WSJ) that they might not have votes. then when do have the votes Fri guess who gets toasted as winner? guess who WH then owes?
it’s all GOP stagecraft folks, not sure why press falls for it each time
