Lets us talk about #Insecurity since this is the latest grumbling topic for Nigeria’s inept upper and middle class. Insecurity. Enh make we talk am. First what is insecurity? In Nigerian context it means when rich men don’t feel safe. Never mind if everyone else rots. Simple. -1/
The senators that collect 12 million Naira monthly allowance aside from countless kick backs and quaff 150 billion Naira annual budget were the latest to complain about #Insecurity today. But you see in Nigeria, the joke is on all of us. Why? Lets take a journey. -2/
So do you expect to be safe when you produce children faster than jobs? You expect to be safe when 26 million young people can’t find work, and another 25 million are under-employed while 20 million are stuck in minimum wage work? You really think you can get safety? -3/
The problem of the current incoherent discourse of #Insecurity in Nigeria is that it is definitely self serving. @OfficialPDPNig spent 16 years mocking those of us that advocated for local policing. Obasanjo dismisses SNC, crushed attempts to openly discuss true federalism. -4/
And yet, we are supposed to believe the senators of a party that opposed policing at basic state level had suddenly discovered religion and fell in love with local policing? No it is plain self serving trick. It is now fun to hijack an idea to score points- no strategy. -5/
It is very simple. Can states that FGN routinely bail out go pay salary truly afford to kit and equip police of their own without increasing taxes or getting more revenue? Why r state police advocates not cutting FG costs and advocating for devolved revenue first? It’s a joke -6/
There is no doubt in my mind that the security apparatus of Nigeria need wholesale reform. The military need re-organization after years of bastardization. The intelligence network is weak & needs to be strengthened. Borders need massive overhaul. It ain’t cheap. -/7
Lets for a second assume we can even get a sugar daddy to fund the Nation since we insist on paying only 6% of our GDP as taxes while some of in the start-up industry insist on no taxes, would we escape the reality that lack of jobs play a big role in our #Insecurity issues? -/8
Speaking about jobs, as far back as 2011 I published on NIA now iNigeria an article that helps the uninitiated connect the widespread indifference to good governance at our (especially) local, state and federal to the #Insecurity problem we experienced inigerian.com/boko-harem-rea… -/9
If only I had known 9 years ago, that Boko Haram was just warning up I could have slowed my second missive helping our inept tribalistic, shallow analysis elites connect the dot to the suffering they were experiencing & what took place in Libya et al nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/boko-… -/10
Now our elite’s best game is to play Ostrich. When in 1999 they could have rewritten a badly written constitution to establish a proper federal structure, they preferred to squander the collective commonwealth at the center and expand Federal bureaucracy -/11
That expanded civil service, crippled the state and became so parasitic that by 2014 we were borrowing to pay their salaries, despite oil selling at 3 digits for a barrel. We budgeted pittance for road building even as infrastructure crumbled & folks were out of work thus -/12
In the midst of this the military was commercialized, money meant to fight terrorists disappeared into soak away pits & security money was used to prosecute election campaigns. The criminals walk free today & you have the guts to shout #Insecurity 🤣😂
Things got so bad that states were owing average of 5-24 months from 2014 to 2017. Teachers, Pensioners, Civil Servants with kids & liabilities all owed! How do you want their wards to feed if not crime? #Insecurity your mouth! Same states that want police now! Ole. -/14
The new elite idea of creating layers of hungry and badly equipped police force which they can use as personal army to feel safe is the hijack of a good idea for bad intent. Forget the local policing as a strategy, what we need first is JOBS. And less greed, and more TAX. -15
Yes you heard me, everyone must be ready to pay their fair share if we want to secure this land. Informal sectors must be formalized. LGs must function again & collect property taxes even on those your idle mansions. From thence, we will find job creation & security -/16
Just before you bomb my thread, here is the simple maths on funding the country we want and desire rather than the one we just bad mouth and talk about. link.medium.com/tt4sdWkHE3 -/17
Once you get the money to fund ALL tiers of government and rewrite the bad constitution, here is my template for police reforms in short. It is progressive but costs money remember? link.medium.com/bCDMyxqHE3 -18/
While at it, and trying to understand why unless you create JOBS no amount of ammunition or tanks will save you elites from insecurity, please do catch up on this missive. link.medium.com/ihcNYDyHE3 -19/
And before the lesson class closes shop we have one more article for you if you don’t think our population time Bomb and contest for scarcer resources (including Lake Chad drying up) got something to do with this. Born Less. In short. Listen to Emir. link.medium.com/JQwOlmJHE3 -/20
So when next you talk about #Insecurity and blame @MBuhari please look at the man in mirror. First check your Peepee, Next Check your Pocket, Next Check Conscience ... when last did you pay your full tax, stop pilfering & producing horizontally? Ok o. The END. -21/
