A little remarked upon Brexit effect is that UK film makers & broadcasters can no longer class their content as “European”.
Because the EU has rules on minimum EU content this greatly helps BBC, ITV etc sell their programs to EU - a business worth billions for the UK.
So...
It shouldn’t be surprising the BBC has announced huge redundancies in Brexit week.
EU broadcasters will be legally bound to limit their purchase of post EU UK broadcasters - a business that UK is a leader in the EU in.
This isn’t about punishing UK - it’s simply the law.
No doubt UK media companies will try to find ways round this.
One way is making co-productions in English with EU media where the production is clearly a majority European program.
This could mitigate some of the problem but naturally means less work for UK media workers.
So another irony of Brexit is that the BBCs promotion of Farage & the “legitimate concerns” of racists has smashed its business model of selling content globally to subsidize content to UK viewers.
Redundant BBC journalists might do well to reflect on this before they whine.
