I am simply incapable of understanding how a single one of my fellow citizens could watch a performance like this and say with pride “now that’s my President!” It’s totally surreal.
Imagine being a Senator, at the pinnacle of your political career, and having to sit and watch this rambling, incoherent, self-pitying, menacingly vindictive speech and know that this is your party’s polestar, its inspirational leader chosen and beloved by your base.
If you were dropping your kid off at camp and the camp director gave a talk like this, you’d put the kid back in the car and go home. Instead of doing that, 62 million of my fellow citizens gave this guy the nuclear codes.
If your father or grandfather started going off on paranoid and delusional rants like this, you’d get them an appointment with a mental health provider. You wouldn’t give them carte blanche to run a nation of 350 million without any oversight or constraint.
Is it really possible that so many of my fellow citizens inhabit media worlds and social orbits in which people just talk and act like this all the time, and so it just seems normal?
