Historically, Indian Sufi-Ulema-Islamist-ruler front that won Islamic ldrship, best seen in Ahmad Sirhindi who stated Islam depended on Islamist ruler helping physically humiliating/destroying Hindus. Here's why cow-slaughter is not abt "food"(letter to Lalah Beg,Mughal official) 
To see what Islamic thought that won out under Sirhindi type "Sufis" "flowing peacefully over India", actually thought of Hindu "avatars" like Rama and Krsna: (letter to one Hardey Ram, a Hindu who had written of his "love" for Naqsbandya jihadi sufism)
Per this Naqsbandi Sufi jihadi: "Shariat prospers under the shadow of the sword (al-Shara‘ tahat al-saif). And the glory of the holy Shariat depends on the kings of Islam" (frm trans by Maulana Muhammad S.A Naqshbandi, Deoband, 1988, Volume I, p.211 )
this "Sufi" thinks Hindus shd be "kept away like dogs", used, when unavoidable, but not "respected", only "humiliated/degraded":[letter to Shaikh Farid, opposed to Akbar’s religious policy, supported Jahangir’s accession after latter's promise to "uphold Islam" in the new reign]
Here is one for "khalistani" lovers of mullahs and jihadis across the border, and who claim "Hindus" are the greater enemies than their new-found beloved sufi-jihadis: Sufi jihadi Sirhindis exultation on a Sikh Guru's sadistic execution by "tolerant, secular" Mughals:
Sufi Sirhindi admits that "sharia" can only be maintained by sword and needs mullah-ruler for that, and admiration for Taimur the jihadi sadist that continues till today:(a jihadi sadist is admirable as long as he keeps patronizing sufis)
Sufi Sirhindi urges "cursing" Hindus not just with heart but "physically", damns those Muslims in death who had any friendship with Hindus in lives: a revealing insight in how hatred of the Hindu can be carefully nurtured within pretensions of Sufi "benevolence":
Sufi Sirhindi here urges actively destroying Hindu temples: to Shaikh Farid raiding Kangra in 1620 to conquer the fort and destroy its temples. Tolerant secular Mughal Jahangir followed the Nawab in order to celebrate the victory by slaughtering cows and building a mosque.
If one closely studies this champion of Naqsbandyah Sufis in India, and notes that his brand of Sufi mullah-giri actually won over all else in Indian Islam, after the temporary, uneasy tactical compromises by Akbar- one can see what Indian Islam was really all about.
Its not enough to cite Hallaj, or Ibn Arabi in middle-eastern theatre of jihad, or opponents of Sirhindi, or existence of one Dara Shikoh, Hallaj and Dara wr executed - and Sirhindi won favour with Jehangir, and Mughal state quickly "corercted" its course and became more jihadi.
Ironically even in "Sufi" Dara Shikoh's own biography of Sufis "Ship of the saints", (c 1640) Dara appears more keen to defend Sirhindi's reputation and doesnt discuss Sirhindi's violent exhortations against Hindus.
"Sufi" Sirhindi's victory shd clearly show what Indian Islam actually favoured. And his letters, shd show that insistence on specific aspects of Islamist ritual practices cd possibly have centuries old hidden perceptions of loss of right to humiliate/destroy the "Hindu other".
