THREAD

Two-thirds of the 149 women murdered in 2018 were killed by their partner or ex-partner, domestic abuse and sexual violence is on the rise. Male violence against women is a national crisis. Yet, a concerted political response remains elusive. 1/8

Despite more than half a century of campaigning and activism this crisis continues to deepen.

We are a seeing "...a high degree of normalisation of men’s violence against women..." said @K_IngalaSmith, a co-founder of @FemicideCensus 2/8

In London, the media and political attention on the crisis of 'Gangs, Knife Crime, and Serious Youth Violence' - fails to properly acknowledge the extent to which the scourge of domestic violence is a precursor to and root cause of these types of crime. 3/8
Violence perpetrated by terrorists gets huge airtime & significant funding to combat it. But 15 times more people (overwhelmingly women) in Britain are killed by domestic violence than by terrorism - yet airtime and funding for DV remains meagre. 4/8

Last year, in London alone, over 60% of women referred to refuges were turned away - amounting to 2000 women (plus, in many cases, their children). Since 2010 funding for refuges in London was cut by 38% forcing many to close. 5/8
Do women's lives matter?

The Mayor of London says he is a proud feminist, there are miraculous claims that Boris Johnson is too: but where is the political will, decisive action, and funding to respond to and stem this tide of violence against women? 6/8
As a minimum, The Women's Equality Party (@WEP_UK) is calling for:

- No woman to be turned away from a refuge
- Sustainable funding for refuges and crisis services including specialist services
- Action to address the causes and normalisation of male violence against women

Women are dying, lives are being ruined, and communities and generations are being blighted. Sign and share @WEP_UK's 'Save Our Services' petition now to demand sustainable funding for refuges and a proper response from politicians. womensequality.org.uk/sos
