The points system will disproportionately affect women.

Women are more likely to work part-time or in low income roles because unpaid caring responsibilities for children and older and disbled relatives still disproportionately fall to women. 1/9

The classification of what counts as 'skilled' is gendered. The govt has said it will expand the category of skilled workers to include carpentry & plastering but not social care, a profession that is overwhelmingly female because of the gendered expectations set by society. 2/9
The global gender pay gap stands at 31%, so the Women's Equality Party (@WEP_UK) is calling for the income threshold to be 31% lower for women than for men. 3/9
Some sectors that rely on migrant workers likely to see shortages include nursing, catering, domestic work, and social care. The govt has said it will make allowances for temporary seasonal workers such as fruit pickers, but no such concessions for health and social care. 4/9
HomeSec said 8.5m 'economically inactive' people could fill the gap. Many are women who are full-time carers for children & families: to call them economically inactive is as insulting as it is inaccurate, bc women's unpaid care work contributes £77bn to the economy every yr. 5/9
Unless the govt makes a substantial investment in childcare and social care, this ridiculous idea will fall flat on it's face. These short-sighted plans are more likely to exacerbate the shortages in formal care, leaving it to women to pick up yet more unpaid care work. 6/9
In Aug 2018, a DoH report declared that WOMEN (note, not men) would have to drop out of work to fill the social care gaps left by EU workers after Brexit. 7/9

Unless the govt steps up with significant investment in social care and a long-term plan to address the existing gap between demand and provision, the gap will only widen - with women propping up the economy to an even greater degree than they do currently. 8/9
There are already over 100,000 vacancies in social care, because it is undervalued, underpaid and is not a respected profession. 9/9
