THREAD: Ashley Tellis’ assessment of U.S.-India relations is worth reading, caveats and all. But how ‘surprising’ have developments been?

foreignaffairs.com/articles/india…
Depends on who one asks. I’m constantly puzzled by the duality of assessments of India-U.S. relations.

Essentially (with exceptions), the two governments and business interests tend to be bullish, while scholarly communities & the media tend to be consistently more pessimistic.
Part of the biases (in both directions) may be structural. Businesspeople and diplomats have to be optimistic, or nothing would get done. Academics and the media will (in very different ways) get more attention focusing on the bad news.
The reality is, of course, always somewhere in between. But it’s helpful to keep these divergent perspectives in mind.

Also, as a consumer, I find it beneficial when optimistic constituencies address the differences and pessimists acknowledge the positives. END
