I joined my brother @AUC_MoussaFaki, Chair @_AfricanUnion, for their & @AfricaCDC’s emergency meeting on #COVID19 preparedness.

Very important that African ministers of health met to strengthen continental and national level preparedness.
.@WHOAFRO is partnering with @AfricaCDC to prepare countries in Africa for the potential arrival of the #coronavirus.

We are also providing advice to countries on how to do screening, testing, contact tracing and #COVID19 treatment.
I called on my brothers & sisters, @_AfricanUnion Ministers, to:
-work with @WHO representatives to respond to #COVID19 in a coordinated fashion
-ratify the resolution for the Africa Medicines Agency
-attend the Marrakesh meeting on diplomacy & health security in March

I’ve just been at the airport seeing off members of an advance team for the @WHO-led #2019nCoV international expert mission to #China, led by Dr Bruce Aylward, veteran of past public health emergencies.
As I told media yesterday, #2019nCoV spread outside #China appears to be slow now, but could accelerate. Containment remains our objective, but all countries must use the window of opportunity created by the containment strategy to prepare for the virus’s possible arrival.
There’ve been some concerning instances of onward #2019nCoV spread from people with no travel history to 🇨🇳. The detection of a small number of cases may indicate more widespread transmission in other countries; in short, we may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg.

I just briefed #EB146 members again on the #2019nCoV outbreak. I thanked the countries:
- who shared #2019nCoV vital data with @WHO
- who already pledged their funds to support the outbreak
It is vital that we invest now. We have a window of opportunity to exploit now.
I stressed that the world is facing a chronic shortage of personal protective equipment.
This afternoon I will be speaking to the Pandemic Supply Chain Network to identify the bottlenecks & find solutions, to push the fairness of the distribution of equipment. #2019nCoV #EB146

-providing diagnostic tools
-mobilizing resources for the global response
-preparing the technical mission to 🇨🇳
.@WHO is working with:
-clinical networks for #2019nCoV acute respiratory disease patient care
-modelling networks for updated transmission estimates
-laboratory networks for molecular testing & equipping laboratories for rapid detection
.@WHO is also working with our infection, prevention and control (IPC) network to provide clear messages for #healthworkers in line with our IPC guidance; and with countries on implementing early epidemiology investigations.

That's a tough question, but, if it helps, here's how I'm currently thinking about #COVID19 in the US.
To begin, it's always prudent to prepare, but not panic. I'd point you to @cmyeaton, @HelenBranswell, and @mlipsitch who are the rational experts (w/ consistent Twitter presences) that I look to for all things epidemic preparedness and this US Gov. site: ready.gov/pandemic
Regarding impacts, there's scant evidence that travel restrictions are feasible ways to prevent spread. That has not stopped governments from imposing them. Given the irrationality of our current admin, anything seems possible ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… & journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…
