Watching this excellent interview with @AnandWrites about wealth inequality, and at about 3:30 he hits an excellent point about work and its value to society 1/ :
“Entrepreneurs are just one type of person in society pursuing one type of good, which is money and growth. You know, it turns out that what teachers do is not motivated by that kind of calculation and actually turns out to be really, really important to a civilized society… 2/
If [people] abandoned [going] into medicine or public service, if we abandoned that, [and only] pursuit of money is an end goal, we'd have an impoverished society…” 3/
This reminded me of something @MittRomney said during his 2012 Presidential campaign while admiring the mega-mansion/estate of the Papa John's guy: 4/
"What a home this is, what grounds these are, the pool, the golf course," he said. "You know, if a Democrat were here he'd look around and say no one should live like this. Republicans come here and say EVERYONE should live like this!" 5/
My immediate thought was, "Really? What about the gardeners and groundskeepers? How about your kids' teachers? How about nurses and doctors? You waitress? The researchers at the NIH? Public Health workers?" 6/
@AnandWrites makes these and many more points more eloquently, but for me, let's end this mythology that avarice is the American Dream. It is not. The American Dream is unique to each individual. 7/
