THREAD: On my mind now as #covid19 panic ratchets up:

We need to separate out the market/social effect, from public health response, from health impact of #covid19 when we talk/write/think about the virus.
With the outbreak in Wash. state and more US cases discovered in weeks ahead, the public health response is going to ramp up fast. Public health has to prepare for the nightmare scenario.
And with markets dropping too, the political response is going to become more severe, dramatic. But...

We will don’t know Covid-19’s real health effects. Still so so much we don’t know about the virus.
World is learning fast but science hasn’t nailed the very basics — how it spreads, how severe is it, etc.

Still possible this pandemic ends up looking like H1N1 swine flu in 2009 — not very deadly at all. Still possible that it’s much worse.
So as we watch public health prepare for the nightmare, and political rhetoric go haywire with the markets, let’s be careful to not conflate it with knowledge about the virus itself. END
