British had the practice of altering the names of places with the objective of vanishing the history and destroying the facts. For example Bhasmachal (Umananda) was renamed as Peacock Island, Ram Setu was renamed as Adam's Bridge, Mumbai as Bombay and so on .

In the middle of the river Brahmaputra and to the north of Guwahati city the Umananda temple is situated in a rocky island where Mahadev resides in the name of Bhairav of Maa Kamakhya Devi .

Different ancient literatures named this island as Bhairav Dham, Bhasmasila and Bhasmachall.
Ancient scriptures mention that when Lord Vishnu cut off the corpse of Sati with His Sudarsan Chakra, Lord Shiva looked around and finding nobody nearby went into a trance at Bhasmachall

Bhasm means ashes and Achal means hill . Once Kamdev was burnt into ashes by Shiva while he was meditating in the trance.

After Mahadev Shiva burnt Kamdev (God of Love) into ashes, Rati, the wife of Kamdev, prayed to Mahadev and requested to give her husband's life back. Shiva gave him life again, but the former beauty and grandeur of Kamdev vanished.

Kamdev and Rati prayed again to Mahadev to regain Kamdev’s beauty. At last Mahadev was pleased and and ordered Kamdev to build the Maa Kamakhya temple in the sacred spot of the Nilachal Hills.

Kamdev got back his former status and appearance after completing the sacred duty of building the temple with the help of the celestial architect Vishwakarma. As Kamdev got back his beauty in that place, the place was named as Kamrup, the ancient name of Assam.

Ancient scriptures also say that on repeated requests of Devas, Shiva decided to marry Uma the another birth of Parvati . Uma and Shiva used to visit Bhasmachal for pleasure due to which it is known as Umananda .
