A #COVID19ireland thread....
As a result of the escalation in the number of cases of coronavirus, my oncologist contacted me last night to strongly advise me to avoid large gatherings of people since I am in an at risk groups for severe disease should I contract the virus 1/7
And so, I have cancelled all events for March in order to do my bit to help to contain the virus to protect myself but also to protect other vulnerable members of my community like my mother, who has rheumathoid arthritis and takes medication that suppresses her immune system 2/7
We ALL need to do what we can to slow the spread of this virus as much as possible in order to allow the @HSELive and @roinnslainte to get our hospitals as prepared as possible so that we maximise of having ICU beds for those who need them, when they need them. And so...3/7
There are THREE things we can ALL do to slow the spread of coronavrius:

- Wash our hands MORE OFTEN for AT LEAST 20 seconds with soap and water

- Avoid touching our faces.

- Cough or sneeze into our elbows

I don't have a video to show how to cough or sneeze into our elbows. I think we all know how to do that BUT I did find this simulation from the BBC which shows just HOW important hand washing an additional 10 times a day is to slowing the coronavirus ⬇️

I am supporting our doctors and epidemiologists, like @ProfJohnCrown and Prof Sam McConkey and others who have called on the Government to to postpone the #StPatricksDayParade NOW... 1/6
And not in a week's time, or two days beforehand. Do the RIGHT thing now.

Yes, the economy will suffer BUT we postponed the parades in 2001 following the Foot and Mouth disease when Min for Agr Joe Walsh showed true leadership and postponed the parades until May of that year 2/6
And the economy recovered and, most importantly, the measures taken limited the spread of the disease. We must also remember that Foot & Mouth was a disease which ONLY affected livestock and famers' livelihoods. Human lives are at risk with #COVID19 yet our Government wait 3/6

screening system & who had developed cervical cancer and to determine, in cases where results were discordant, what was the impact on treatment, prognosis and outcome. It is notable that the focus yesterday by Government was on RCOG’s endorsement of the screening programme...3/9

2/n In last 10 days Italy diagnosed 95% of total cases they now report; South Korea 85%. 2 weeks ago, Italy had just 9 cases. 7 weeks ago, China reported 50 cases. The point: once the epidemics are discovered, they’ve been underway. Case counts grow quickly. Same likely true here
3/n What should we do now? Moving quickly and aggressively to mitigate spread, reduce the scope of the epidemic here, continue to ready the healthcare system, work with cities and states to develop a uniform, systematic response; provide financial assistance to help these efforts

(2) My perspective: The lack of transparency by our Government in relation to the non-sharing of the locations of where confirmed/potential #COVID19 cases are has frustrated me to no end...
(3) One reason I worried was that people could have early signs of symptoms but because they think it’s not ‘in their area’ they go about their daily business without realising they could catch and/or be sharing it with many more...(the following tweet is just an hypothesis...)

Earlier today, state and local health officials announced new guidance to @KingCountyWA residents aimed at reducing their risk of exposure to #COVID19.

See the recommendations to reduce the risk of spread of #coronavirus: bit.ly/COVIDrecommend…
While all residents can take steps now, people with underlying health conditions are urged to pay special attention to recommendations to avoid large gatherings of people.
Public Health also announced on Wednesday 10 additional confirmed cases of #COVID19 in @KingCountyWA residents, including 1 death.

This brings the total of confirmed cases to 31, including 9 deaths.

Our estimate at 4,000 cases is more than double the past estimate due to increase of number of cases outside China. This should not be interpreted as implying the outbreak has doubled in size.

Thread 2/10: Since then, cumulative confirmed cases reported by the Chinese authorities have increased 10-fold, to 440 by January 22nd.The number of detected outside China with symptom onset by 18th January had increased to 7 in the same time.
