Following the Clinton-Sanders race with the Biden-Sanders race is almost like a natural experiment in — to put it gently — the role gender plays in voter preferences and judgments about electability.
Clinton and Biden are both establishment Democrats who served at high levels in Obama's administration and have long policy records in the center of the Democratic Party. And Clinton was a sharper candidate with more support from party leadership and more money.
And yet it looks like Biden will beat Sanders in a lot of places Clinton either lost or barely won.

That may just be Trump pushing the Democratic electorate to a candidate they perceive as safer, but I'm skeptical that it's just that.
