MANAGING THE CHAOS
(my reflections to help give some structure to the madness or simply to rock your world) 1/
I had some time this morning to try to put some order to the chaos. I generally use this chart for my students for crises in the past, but hopefully it helps. There are 5 stages to a disaster (left and right of noon) and we are just at response. See the “you are here!” 2/
We need to get a battle rhythm. We will. All disasters seem like a cluster. We need to pace. Exhale. And hunker down. 3/
I say this not as a therapist but look at this chart, our collective mission. I call it the “extend the runway” goal. We need to ensure our needs don’t overwhelm our capacity. 4/
So what does it mean? Success will take longer, a flatter curve is a longer curve. So we don’t know when that will be (see my written comments under “recovery” above) but it’s not tomorrow. 5/
If you’ve been following along, most of the rest of my notes are self explanatory. The challenge of any pandemic is that it is a slow roll crisis so the moment of activation seems both jarring and disjointed especially because it impacts all of us. That was this week. 6/
And of course we could have done better, done more with the time we had (kits! Where are the testing kits!), and had a national leader capable of leading. We have the president we have, not the one we need. Dont dwell. Move forward. 7/
I hope this is helpful. I’m not here to say it’s ok. But I’m pleased by the leadership at local, state and institutional level that is taking this so seriously. So here’s some attempt — not perfect, not complete — that guides my thinking. All good. Class dismissed. 8/8
