Discussion in class linked to #InternationalWomensDay2020 left some in the class frustrated.

“I just don’t get why women think they’re hard done by” stuck out.

So today, I gave a mini presentation to the class after lunch. I began by asking: What do you see here?

Not one person realised the King was above the queen. When pointed out, nearly all had an ‘ooooh’ moment.

Then asked what the reaction would be if Megan Rapinoe celebrated like this:

I noted that (through own knowledge) some female football referees have to get changed in their cars, even at some semi pro grounds, because there are only male changing rooms in many venues - especially grass roots.

Google might have taken measures to address gender balance in its image searches - but add an adjective before a job and the results are bleurgh.

And the gender pay gap: it’s a real thing.

I alters this slide to ‘sexual assualt’ as that was language brought up by the class the day before.

Voiced I was taken aback and saddened by the number of men who had been assaulted. Then a pupil said “but look at the number of women.”

Indeed.

I finished by pointing out that there is an international men’s day but asked what men still needed to campaign for...The class (even dissenters) drew a blank.

I noted male suicide rates, pressure to be muscular and in shape etc
