A Vaccine Won’t Stop the New Coronavirus - This viral class is likely to mutate so vaccine development will have to be cyclical and it won’t be quick.

Shutting borders, entertainment events, schools, closing cities won’t make this virus go away.

“Certain containment measures will be appropriate, but widely banning travel, closing down cities, and hoarding resources are not realistic solutions for an outbreak that lasts years. All of these measures come with risks of their own.”
We have been watching countries become overwhelmed with very sick people resulting in hospital resources & health professionals so overstretched they are having to decide who will live and who will die.

Heartbreaking.
No cure exists, although a repurposing of existing drugs are being tried in an attempt to mitigate the worst effects.

Hardly surprising our instincts are to hide away

“My strategy is to not get it, because I don’t know what will happen if I do”
The trouble is experts predict it is likely to be with us in this or another mutated form not for just days or weeks or even months, but years.

“The prevention of COVID19 could prove challenging”.
A vaccine MAY be ready in 12-18 month, but that is ambitious. A run of companies and institutions will claim to have vaccines “ready”. Ready for what? Not use.

This is a way of getting headlines and investment so that the expensive & sometimes risk trials can start.
“If we’re putting all our hopes in a vaccine as being the answer, we’re in trouble,” Jason Schwartz, Assistant Prof, Yale School of Public Health who studies vaccine policy,

Nothing to say that by the time an effective one is found that the virus itself will have mutated
Whilst we are in shut down mode we have to keep supply chains going otherwise manufacturing not just this but the PPE gear, the ventilators won’t be available.

Enough people have to be well enough to produce the food and goods we need to live.

Businesses have to survive.
It seems to me that the impulse to shut down and bunker in is an understandable survival response but we have to be careful because it could be storing up trouble.

In the U.K. we have created a special little hell of our own.
If this Gov gets its way we will no longer be in transition. Supply chains, inc medical supply chains under strain or broken.
That on top of the fact that the world is experiencing a shock that is not just threatening lives, but investment and supply chains too in ways that many people thought unimaginable 6 months ago.

As we withdraw behind borders and walls we also see so clearly how connected we are
We have to think and strategise beyond shut down in order TO survive.

We are really just finding a space where we can catch our breath and think, prepare and necessarily move outwards again because that is necessary for survival too.
The people of Siena, Milan, singing and dancing in the face of horrendous losses is not just an act of defiance but of courageous determination to be connected, NOT to be cowed, to be outward Not Locked down in spirit.

We, in the U.K. and the USA, fear that our Governments have not the competency, the human decency or the wisdom to rise to the occasion with the compassionate skill and organisational effectiveness that will be critical to navigate this well and light a pathway out.
If they don’t then THEIR survival will be hanging by a thread.

Meanwhile we will have to call on our own resources, our own wisdom and, yes, our own courage to meet the unknown.
