Thread: A tie-in between ACT, SAT, and COVID-19. It's probably not what you think.

My first time working with modeling was in 1996, when we were developing neural networks to model the inquiry pool.
The person doing the modeling asked me: Do you want the model to better predict who WILL apply, or who WILL NOT apply?

That was something I'd not thought of.
But it's really "Do you want more false negatives" (Saying the student won't apply when they will) or false positives? (saying they will apply when they won't)?
Now, ask that same question about a COVID-19 test. You want low false negatives, right? You don't want to tell someone they're negative when in fact they're positive.
The SAT and ACT are the opposite: Colleges that rely on them heavily are highly selective; they don't want a test to give a false positive (suggesting the student is accomplished) when they're not. They want double confirmation: GPA and Test Scores.
Does your campus really need that? Do you need to allocate slots only to those who excel at both?

Unless you work at one of 100 colleges, the answer is no.
Think about it for a bit.
Oh, and #EMTalk
