So, in my line of business the @JustinTrudeau announcement for 10% wage support ($25k over 3 months) will not save 1 job or 1 business including mine. I am disheartened. Watching other politicians congratulate themselves on "leadership" was equally disheartening but unsurprising.
Fyi - this is probably the longest tweet ever written. Sorry. Thanks for sticking to the end. Feel free to pass along, share, retweet.etc.
Like many business owners this past week, I was in the position of telling valued employees there was no more work today. I went home and wept like I have never done before. I have never felt so helpless, never felt so unsure of my future, never felt so scared for my family.
We couldn't even provide the Record of Employment because of the high demand @ADP and 8 hours on hold because of the massive unprecedented demand for layoffs in Canada and around the globe. I don't think many people understand the impact of what we are experiencing now ...
... and what is still to come. It just hasn't sunk in yet. There was a person tweeting this afternoon about the #14daysofgratitude which turned into a string about the hardship of secure publicly-funded professionals having to hunker down at home after 3 days ... please stop ...
... really, please stop. My second job as a politician often makes me cringe with bureaucrats/politicians who live inside the bubble of municipal politics. While they are all mostly kind-hearted and nice people, they have no idea of the generous secure positions they have.
It super bother me. The disingenuous platitudes by politicians bothers me as much. They mean well ... but does anyone think that $25k over 3 months says they comprehend small business? That would support my business a week and a half....
And speaking of @woolwichnews I started this paper 25 years ago with my brother. Lots of people helped us out along the way. I was 22 and had nothing to lose. I mostly learned business by doing it. Not one aspect of our business was easy to build. We defied the odds, challenged..
..a local bully and the corporate media and won, survived a recession, fake news, Google and Facebook. @woolwichnews is one of the most awarded weekly newspapers in Canada.
I hope it isn't too late -- but you need to know our story and the story about every independent local newspaper in Canada. They have been struggling for years. While ad sales have flattened or declined for years, all of our costs have increased. Competition from US corps ...
... has been our biggest threat. We have researched and explored every efficiency available that didn't compromise quality or our integrity. Unlike our corporate colleagues, we refused to outsource production and graphic design offshore, print verbatim press releases, or ...
be online first at any cost. We've been online since 1997 at ObserverXtra.com it cost us $40,000 annually to provide @woolwichnews online and we receive about $200.00 annually from @Google in advertising. It is a terrible investment economically... we do it for readers ..
Back to US competition. I'm talking about Google and Facebook here. Between the two they have secured more than 80% of the advertising market. Despite years of unfair competition complaints and canadian advertisers paying in US dollars (no #Cdn tax) @CdnGov and @ONgov have ...
..become one of @Facebook & @Google largest customers. No newspaper in Canada wants a handout. What we want is our governments to start using newspaper services to deliver important messages to the public. Newspaper trustworthiness with the public is beyond ALL media. Yup ...
... we can't publish fake ads/info like @facebook Governments using #cdnmedia services to deliver government messages would solve a host of media/democratic issues and save community news. It's been a decade since we've seen federal or provincial advertising.
I'm not going to change the circumstances of current events with probably the longest tweet ever created, but when we say "We're all in this together" ... know that we are not.
The federal government made that clear today by picking winners and losers.
Airlines and gas companies can expect federal bailouts while small biz can get low interest soul-crushing debt to prolong the death of their business and risk losing their homes. Again, politicians mean well, but struggle with our reality.
And I still see myself as one of the lucky ones. There are many more people that will be hurt by the indirect impacts of COVID-19. It makes me incredibly sad because none of us are in this position by our own doing..
... in the coming days your community newspaper is going to be looking for your support. Sorry, this time we need money, we don't need sympathy tweets cause they don't keep the lights on. In light of inaction for small business in Canada we may be forced...
...to take a break and come back when the dust settles. Today was one of the worst days in my professional career. I'm feeling like I have a couple more days like this ahead of me. Sorry to be a downer, but we have to get real. Being house-bound is a short-term problem ...
Stay tuned. #localnewsmatters
Myself and my colleagues want to continue to serve our communities. We have waited for years, but there is No government bailout for local newspapers. Please help @TimLouisKitCon @mikeharrisjrpc @JustinTrudeau @fordnation
