A little #DavesCarIDService for today: this is a circa 1951 Ford Vedette, made by Ford's French subsidiary Ford SAF. Scaled-down, mini version of a 49-51 Mercury. The factory (and Vedette name) were sold to Simca.
For comparison here's a 1949 Mercury, vs an (uncrunched) 1952 French Ford Vedette. The Vedette was powered by the little 136 cubic inch "V8 60" flathead that appeared in some 1930s US Fords
Coolest French Ford for me is the 1951-54 Comete. Gave off a bit of Ferrari vibe with egg crate grille and a bit of Mercedes SL vibe with the bar grille, but with an All-American Ford flathead V8
Comete bodies were in part made by Facel, who later started their own short-lived car company. The 1955-64 Facel Vega is my fave US-French car collaboration, powered by Chrysler & DeSoto Hemis and later Mopar Wedge motors
In case anyone thinks 1950s land yachts were unique to the US, here's a French-made, US-powered 1958 Facel Excellence, which would rival Detroit products of the time for weight and acreage
Ford was out of France by 1954 but Simca continued to use Ford V8 flatheads in cars until early 60s; Ford also produced flathead V8s for French military vehicles up to the 80s(!). Some of these surplus NOS French "tank engines" have shown up in hot rods
Ford's first foray into France was a partnership with Mathis from 1934-40, making slightly odd looking versions of US Ford cars under the brand "Matford." A Matford Alsace won the 1938 Rally Monte Carlo, AFAIK the only European race won by a Ford pre-66 LeMans
