(1) Silence the chimes when people enter and exit

(2) Mute chat notifications during the defense

(3) When making your slides, leave space in the upper right corner for video of your face to appear without blocking content
(4) Ask non-committee audience members to turn off their videos
3/9
(7) Have the audience type their questions in chat instead of unmuting. My advisor read these Qs aloud @ the end.
(8) Breakout rooms work well to let your committee deliberate and rejoin! I recommend practicing beforehand.

(9) Make a plan in case your wifi fails you 😬
(10) Share your cell # & slides w/ committee
(11) Have someone-- ideally physically present to signal you-- read the chat for urgent msgs. Believe me-- you won't check the chat/your phone while you defend

(12) Budget time to mourn the in-person defense you may have wanted/pictured, but...
(13) Embrace opportunities for joy! I wore my dress, popped fancy champagne, & had a remote Zoom happy hour w/ friends after my defense, despite my living room setting.

(14) Don't beat yourself up if you are super distracted "working remotely" in the weeks leading up to your defense! I definitely was.
We've been preparing for YEARS for this. The last few weeks neither make nor break it.
You can do it!!!
