Extremely concerned with slow action / inaction following letter to SoS Health
Ventilators should have been top priority for last 2wks: it’s been a known problem since 2016

German govt
Newsnight film👇
This shortage is neither news nor was it unavoidable
“Despite the severe failings exposed by 2016 pandemic planning Exercise Cygnus, the govt’s planning for a future pandemic did not change”
Shocked they did nothing

I’m urging all existing specialist producers to accelerate production
German govt ordered 16000 from two domestic producers
Britain worse equipped and slower to start; asks any manufacturer to instantly retool “easier said than done”

All of us welcome publishing tech specs and the appeal to manufacturers
But this should have been done weeks ago; ventilation & ICU have been known capacity problems since 2016
We’re losing time we don’t have; let’s get ahead of this
My thoughts are with everyone on #Ventilators tonight, and their anxious loved ones - including these medics who contracted #Covid19 while treating patients
We need SoS Health to be getting ahead in all areas of #NHScapacity & #PPE
While I welcome the entrepreneurial spirit of asking any engineering company to join the fight, this is highly specialist lifesaving equipment & hard to make
Govt should be ahead of capacity shortages; we also need #ventilators staff

The #NHS has 8175 respirators
It looks like we need several times this
1200 extra is NOT a “massive deal”
All capacity is welcome capacity; but we need less triumphalism, and more ventilators - this is very far from being solved
