Feel free to skip this thread if you feel I'm tweeting too much about my Dad and his medical adventures. I will tried to lighten it up a bit though. +
That's him. Watching the rain from his hospital room. Weatherman that he is, I knew it would bring him off the bed and to the window. +
He's been admitted, discharged, and re-admitted thrice or maybe four times. We've lost count. There's a new complication each time. (Illustration from Dr. Seuss's hilarious You're only old once) +
He spent his career plotting synoptic charts, setting up data collection platforms, sending up weather balloons, studying satellite images, and laughing at meteorologist jokes. Like these.
Btw, this is a synoptic chart. I used to marvel at the ease with which he drew isobars in a smooth motion of his pencil. Nowadays of course, computers draw the curves.
When we were kids, he'd point out clouds to us - cumulus, nimbus, cirrus, stratus, and combinations thereof. Running out to see the skies when a storm was approaching was a thing.
Did I tell you he's 90? And that not six months ago, he drove himself to the hospital for his check up? And a few months before that drove my Mom to an ER at night when she got breathless? +
The good people in the Central Government have covered all his medical expenses. That makes him feel good. Not being dependent on the kids. Hat tip to CGHS. They are awesome. +
I am sad we don't appreciate our government enough. They keep our unwieldy, disparate, complex, largely ungrateful country running. Even if at a gentle j o g. So, when they pay up hospital bills running into lakhs without batting an eyelid, I feel like applauding.
But then, as someone who played a part, however small, in predicting cyclones, delayed monsoons, and untimely rains, I guess my father has earned that privilege. Despite all the weatherman jokes.
PS: Don't feel obliged to send get well wishes. I've received so many warm wishes from so many of you already. Genuinely grateful. And like they say 'Kindly ignore if payment already made.'

ANTHE.
