1/5 A lockdown for its own sake by decree is not how any country has fought the #coronavirus. A lockdown must be a set of SPECIFIC MEASURES to flatten the #COVID19 curve to stem the spread of the virus & protect the people & the economy. Mnangagwa's decree lacks such measures!
2/5 Livelihood issues aside, most Zimbabweans live in the townships, rural areas, compounds & on the farms in spaces that are so crowded that social distancing & isolation to stem the spread of the #coronavirus is not possible without specific & organised govt interventions!
3/5 Mnangagwa decreed the lockdown when nurses & doctors are on strike & yet he said nothing about what govt has done or will do to resolve that. It's just wrong to decree a lockdown to fight the #coronavirus when nurses & doctors, the key responders in the fight, are on strike!
4/5 Mnangagwa's decree did not have the necessary facts & figures on the medical interventions that govt will do during the 21-day lockdown: where will testing for #COVID19 be done & by who? Which health facilities are ready to treat #COVID19 patients & what's their capacity?
5/5 Last but not least, a lockdown to fight the #coronavirus must necessarily come with an awareness outreach programme, based on Zim's epidemiological profile, that particularly targets vulnerable groups with suppressed immunity due to preexisting conditions, old age & hunger!

Strangely but tellingly, some took this metaphoric tweet as a prediction of a military coup in February. Ok!
2/21 The words of the tweet speak for themselves, despite the misplaced but understandable attempts to squeeze blood out of them. Zimbabwe is at the crossroads. The country is pregnant with change. Something is afoot. But there's no telling what it is or when it will be born!
3/21 I used the November metaphor to capture & convey the gestalt of the moment. Besides its sacred Shona myths, November has historical significance in Zimbabwe as the month of momentous events. The pioneer column of Cecil John Rhodes moved on King Lobengula in November 1893!

We have already pushed back/cancelled “elective surgeries” like gallbladder and appendix removals. How long do you think that can last before those patients become dire as well?
Heres the best part-w/o any measures to flatten the curve +a completely insufficient supply of PPE,guess whos exposed 2the greatest viral load &are far more likely to become gravely ill?

How to reduce healthcare worker exposure and flatten our #COVID curve
This is what we’re doing w/ OBGYN faculty and residents
1. Separate providers: Inpatient & Outpatient
2. Divide in 2 teams: Active Duty (in person care) and Reserve Duty (Virtual), rotate on 2 wk basis (1/4)
3. Cluster L&D shifts: Same day team and same night team over several consecutive days
4. If pairing or teams, always pair/team the same people together and replace them as a team if one becomes ill (2/4)
5. Mandate each person wipe down the work station/keybboard before each shift and sanitize hands regularly – multiple users at computer stations is unavoidable across a day
6. Enforce social distancing by removing/re-arranging furniture in common areas (3/4)
