Guys, saying ‘JUST DO MORE TESTS!’ isn’t terribly helpful. This piece has good detail but for those who can’t get past paywall, the reagents that are needed are in short supply amid surge in global demand (among other issues) thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/g…
You have to imagine the govt is throwing everything at the problem but there is not AFAIK a magic stockpile of testing kits that are being held back - everyone everywhere scrambling to make more.
Germany is testing massively. Germany also has Europe’s largest chemical industry by far. These facts may presumably be connected.
As commenters have pointed out one of the key components is made by Qiagen in Germany and very few other places. More biological than chemical admittedly...

People are complaining about govt comms strategy. But we live in an age of atomised, personalised media, where trust in govt/elites/politicians is rock bottom. 1/2
There are millions of people who aren't switching on for the press conferences at 5pm every day, and won't simply doing what they're told by the PM or front pages (which they don't read). Just much harder to get messages through these days. 2/2
(This prompted by an emergency trip out of the house/cocoon, and seeing far, far more activity than I expected.)

Renewing my campaign to make it illegal not to give an estimate of waiting time/position in queue when you're stuck on hold. And yes @axainsurance I am looking at you.
Or just a system to register for an automatic callback. So many hours of so many lives wasted.
Seriously @axainsurance it has been 40 minutes and counting - if you don't have anyone answering the phones just say so.

To everyone with a brilliant idea for saving the economy, one really important question you need to ask: does it involve building an entirely new IT/admin system? Or giving money to a group that isn't defined in an existing database? If so, maybe rethink.
Eg 'Govt should give direct grants to renters/landlords/pub-owners/etc' - unless it has a list of them on file, people are going to need to apply, which means a big information campaign to make sure they're aware. Not impossible but much harder/slower than using existing systems.
(For all I know there are databases with lists of the above on - meant as indicative not definitive.)

One of the many questions of the past week in the US has been: "WHY AREN'T WE TESTING ALL SUSPECTED CASES?" This is a very fair and natural question if you do not work in a clinical laboratory or, more broadly, in R&D as applied to human health. 2/
To set the stage, imagine if there would be mass disruption to everyday life by the triggering of containment policies on a grand scale, not to mention lives on the line, if absolutely everything at your work was not reliably perfect every time. Those are the stakes. 3/
