1/ Holy shit. Yesterday @jameswest2010 reported on how gay COVID survivors like him were being banned from donating plasma to clinical trials to help the dying.

TODAY THE FDA RELAXED THE BAN. Not enough, but it's a start.

3/ Gay men still need to abstain from sex—even if monogamous—for three months to be able to donate blood, which is dumb. Re COVID plasma trials they should just test the damn plasma for HIV.

So still dumb and prejudicial. But less so.

I do agree that @NYGovCuomo's good press conferences now are overshadowing the meh leadership he showed before the shit really hit the fan and that Americans should really be looking to @LondonBreed @GavinNewsom @GovInslee and others for what fast and clear action really was/is.

1/8 Types of therapies being considered for #COVIDー19 include antibodies and antivirals, like lopinavir (licensed for HIV) and remdesivir (developed for Ebola but shown to be ineffective in the recent PALM trial in DRC).
2/8 The challenge is that there is rarely a “homerun” with these products. They tend to have a weak/moderate effect, even when used early after symptom onset. Thus, we need randomized clinical trials to tell if they actually work.
