Late last night we had someone phone us at 11:45pm. It was from a mom of 4 who herself had not eaten nothing 3 days just so she could make the food she did have last for her children.
This mom had gone to the food bank and gone to the brown bagging for kids as well has utilized the free meals that are handed out throughout the city.
This is a mom who has tried EVERYTHING to find a job and get help from different organizations and the government.
She went to Alberta Works and was told she had to go after the dad for child support before they could help her. They gave her papers on how to contact maintenance enforcement and how to go to court for child support. That’s great but that doesn’t help her now....
She went to the foodbank, which does amazing work for Calgarians, but at the current time, you can only get a hamper every 10days and with three growing teenagers and one young child....food doesn’t last long.
She has utilized each and every resource available. She even called the shelters and the city asking if they knew of any place that could help.
As a last resort she googled food hampers and for some reason @HarvestHillsYYC popped up along with a Facebook post that had our number in it from months ago. So not hoping too much she dialled our number and Jen answered. At 11:45pm at night she answered.
She listened to this mother...and while listening to her she gathered up enough food for the rest of the week. She quietly loaded it up in her car and drove it over to this mother’s house all while on the phone with this mom. Telling her to look outside....
This mom opened the door to Jen holding bags of food for her and her kids. At 11:45pm at night no less!!! The mother burst into tears and hugged Jen in appreciation!! When she asked why, Jen just said...I know what it’s like to be hungry.
So this is why we ask for donations. This is why each and everyone of our volunteers do what we do for the city of Calgary.
Right now we need to raise funds for families who are in need and if you can find it in your heart to donate please do. Please help us help feed others.
Our team will be at this mom’s house this evening to deliver her a hamper!
If there is anyone that would like 2 contribute 2 a special “mom” care package & a cool “kids” care package please consider sending a donation via etransfer to:
We were at a store in Southeast #Calgary. We were shopping for some groceries when my stepson saw someone take a package of meat and put it under their shirt and then slowly walk over to their cart. #Food#Hungry#Alberta#yyc
Someone then took it upon themselves to legit walk over there and publicly shame the person. Sure people came to the person who took the package of meat but the other entitled bigot just wouldn’t stop.
I stepped in. I was NOT going to let another #Calgarian be treated like that.
I went over to the person and asked if I could help at all. The entitled bigot told me to kick rocks (in not so nice words) but I wouldn’t let that phase me.
I told the person in a loud voice that we would have no problem buying them some groceries no questions asked. #Groceries
We have 2 requests on our list to tend to before we hit the ground running this week!
If we could get help with the following two request that would be amazing!

What a freaking night last night was. If I feel broken after what I experienced and witnessed last night….what do people who sleep rough and outside feel like?
