Our attention has been drawn to an erroneous report by @PremiumTimesng in which insights shared in an address by our Chief Economist Dr. Andrew S. Nevin (Ph.D.) [@nevinomics] was wrongly reported. #Thread
Dr Nevin as part of his keynote address at the recent Annual National Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), stated that counterfeits account for 17% of the generic drugs in supply. Cc @PremiumTimesng @NafdacAgency @DGatNAFDAC
He also added that various sources had at different times quoted different proportions for the level of counterfeits in the country. Cc @premiumtimesng @nafdacagency @DGatNAFDAC
An online news platform @premiumtimesng subsequently reported that Dr. Nevin had said that 70% of drugs in Nigeria were fake. Cc @nafdacagency @DGatNAFDAC
We wish to state that at no time did Dr. Nevin claim that 70% of drugs in Nigeria were fake as reported by @premiumtimesng. Cc @nafdacagency @DGatNAFDAC
This erroneous report by @premiumtimesng has resulted in the misinformation of the public with attendant inconveniences suffered by both PwC and #NAFDAC. Cc @DGatNAFDAC @nafdacagency
The transcript of Dr Nevin’s presentation at the Conference is available here for referencing. See page 27. pwc.com/ng/en/publicat… @DGatNAFDAC @NafdacAgency @PremiumTimesng
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) at whose conference the presentation was made have also issued a statement stating the facts. @premiumtimesng @nafdacagency @DGatNAFDAC
We will continue to explore the use of #technology to improve the supply chain integrity for drugs in #Nigeria and fight counterfeiting. We will also frequently share insights on these themes through various channels. @premiumtimesng. Cc @nafdacagency @DGatNAFDAC
Our effort in this regard is in line with our purpose of building trust in society & solving important problems. This was the crux of the address presented by Dr Nevin at the conference @PremiumTimesng @NafdacAgency @DGatNAFDAC #End
