Thread: While the government has been treating Parliament with contempt over its now apparent lack of Brexit impact assessments, the Lords EU Committee has been doing its job for them, investigating the impact a No Deal would have on the UK. 1/
In particular, the evidence of John Foster of the @CBItweets should alarm anybody about the consequences of a No Deal. Here's what he warned falling back on to WTO terms would mean. 2/
Regarding tariffs, the CBI that a No Deal would mean tariffs on 90% of our EU goods exports by value and an average tariff of 4%, worth £4.5 billion to £6 billion of increased costs per year. 3/ 
They also warned about the implications for our ports. Just a two-minute delay at Customs would lead to 17 mile (!) long queues at Dover. 4/
The CBI also warns against a significant imbalance between the UK and EU after a No Deal Brexit. We could end up adopting EU regulations but still lose our freedom to sell our goods in Europe on reciprocal terms. 4/
And most significantly, the CBI goes even further, warning of "significant chaos around cross-border services", that could mean that services, 80% of our economy, would find their ability to conduct business seriously affected. 5/
As Brexiteer Tory MPs once again make threats against any sign of compromise in the negotiations and government seeks to appease them, the warnings in this report shine a light on the true reason why government is trying to avoid parliamentary scrutiny. Don't let them. 6/
