/ Welcome to Tuesday in the independent republic of Brexitlandia.
/ Today is national cherry cake day where all over the country families and friends get together each bringing their own cherry cake to eat individually 🍰
/ The cake symbolises the key Brexit value of wanting everything for yourself without sharing any more than you have to with closest friends and family 🍰
/ In Brexitlandia yesterday ultra Brexiters continued with the furious readjustment of what voting leave actually meant 🤥🤥🤥
/ For many Brexit was about sovereignty of Parliament but it now turns out that was not what they meant at all 🤔
/ Some even think that even if many people feel they were lied to that is not a reason for stopping Brexit but more reason to press ahead
/ Normally that sort of thing is called fraud but I am no expert 🤓
/ Remarkably some Brexiters feel that stopping Brexit would betray the trust of the public even though those same Brexiters lied to the public in the first place @SuellaFernandes
/ Cretinus Maximus @daviddavis even said Brexit would deliver the exact same benefit as EU membership before back-pedalling google.co.uk/amp/www.indepe…
/ IDS and Liam Fox previously described British business as lazy (even though at the time we had the 5th largest economy in the world). Now IDS is telling British business they will have to suck up that trade will be harder
/ Which is odd because the leave campaign was about how the EU was holding UK business back from global trade and trade with the EU was declining and so they needed us more than we needed them 😤😤😤
/ Perhaps the frustration stems from the geographical anomoly that the UK has not moved an inch (not centimetre 🤣) since the leave vote and so trade with your closest neighbours is still the most important 🙄
/ & so faced with this realisation one would think the Maybot & the Cabinet take a step back & reevaluate their plans. The wry observer would note that as there were no plans in the event leave won & no plans before triggering article 50 a tempering of expectations is required
/ And so the Maybot declared that access to the Single Market would continue "as now" ignoring the fact she sent an article 50 letter and her own red lines mean leaving the SM and CU
/ And not to be outdone the Cabinet finally met 18 months after the referendum to try and agree what the will of the people actually meant in terms of a realistic and deliverable outcome that improves on what we had as members of the EU 🦄
/ And so the Cabinet met and to no great surprise realised they did not agree on the end goal of delivering Brexit although they were adamant it mus be delivered and to question that lack of clarity of what is being delivered is no reason to question it 🤡🤡🤡
/ Some want to stay close to the EU rules (which is what the phase 1 deal agreed as a fallback) while others want to have the same access but diverge 🧙‍♂️
/ The lay person who knew nothing about trade deals 18 months ago would note that trade deals are about trust and converging on standards etc. The UK approach is about demanding trust but letting the UK move away from similar standards🕵️‍♂️
/ And not only does the ability to diverge start to undermine trust (which some may say the UK is short of at present), but it also is a pipe dream as other countries that have agreed or will want access to the EU market will aim to converge with EU standards 🧞‍♂️
/ And some may note that agreeing a regime where you can diverge is likely to lead to more red tape and trade disputes which would run against the goal of leading the way in global trade 🤦‍♂️
/ The UK position can be summarised as wanting all the benefits of EU membership without the cost, obligations and foreigners - the perfect cherry cake in other words 🍰
/ But the EU takes the view that there can be no cherry picking by a third country. All that is available is either participation as a single market member or some sort of FTA
/ But Cretinus Maximus @DavidDavisMP ever the master negotiator has said it isin fact the EU that cannot cherry pick 🤔theguardian.com/politics/2017/…
/ Some may think this right because 80% of the UK economy is services based and services access to the SM is key to the economy and indeed tax receipts to fund public services but that is the risk the UK is taking 😭
/ And the approach of Cretinus Maximus is definitely not a power play as that is not how trade negotiations work
/ And it definitely does not reflect a lack of knowledge about how trade deals with EU members are negotiated
/ And while all this time and energy is spent negotiating an outcome that the Cabinet does not know it is aiming for is that no-one is allowed to change their mind as to the course being taken 🤐
/ Some may note that whatever deal is agreed it will not be as good in economic terms as what EU membership delivered. 😢
/ And the impact of reduced tax revenues will hit public services at a time the NHS is already struggling
/ And some who voted leave thinking it would benefit the NHS may wonder where that £350m is and if there are so many NHS job shortages would it not be a good idea to bring in extra nurses and doctors from close by as quickly and easily as possible 🤒
/ And some may be even more alarmed to learn that the lost growth due to the Brexit vote is around £350m a week😱😱😱 ft.com/content/e3b292…
/ But under no circumstances does that mean the Government can be derailed from delivering the will of the people especially when the Cabinet cannot agree what the will of the people means in practical terms that does not leave the ordinary man worse off. 🕊️
